Expressed by the liver and secreted in plasma.

Description:
Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a circulating metabolic enzyme that transports cholesterol from the arteries to the liver (1-3). CETP converts cholesteryl esters from antiatherogenic high density lipoproteins (HDLs) to proatherogenicapolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins, including very low-, intermediate-, and low-DLs (3). Efficient transfer and exchange of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between the lipoprotein classes of human plasma is necessary to maintain healthy arteries (4,5).

Research Backgrounds

Function:

Involved in the transfer of neutral lipids, including cholesteryl ester and triglyceride, among lipoprotein particles. Allows the net movement of cholesteryl ester from high density lipoproteins/HDL to triglyceride-rich very low density lipoproteins/VLDL, and the equimolar transport of triglyceride from VLDL to HDL. Regulates the reverse cholesterol transport, by which excess cholesterol is removed from peripheral tissues and returned to the liver for elimination.
