Research Backgrounds
Catalyzes the exchange of cytoplasmic ADP with mitochondrial ATP across the mitochondrial inner membrane. May serve to mediate energy generating and energy consuming processes in the distal flagellum, possibly as a nucleotide shuttle between flagellar glycolysis, protein phosphorylation and mechanisms of motility.

Note: In sperm flagellum this protein is located in the fibrous sheath, a non-mitochondrial region.
Expressed in brain, liver, sperm and testis.
The transmembrane helices are not perpendicular to the plane of the membrane, but cross the membrane at an angle. Odd-numbered transmembrane helices exhibit a sharp kink, due to the presence of a conserved proline residue.
Belongs to the mitochondrial carrier (TC 2.A.29) family.
