Research Backgrounds

Function:

ATP-specific succinyl-CoA synthetase functions in the citric acid cycle (TCA), coupling the hydrolysis of succinyl-CoA to the synthesis of ATP and thus represents the only step of substrate-level phosphorylation in the TCA. The beta subunit provides nucleotide specificity of the enzyme and binds the substrate succinate, while the binding sites for coenzyme A and phosphate are found in the alpha subunit (By similarity).

Subcellular Location:

Mitochondrion.

Extracellular region or secreted Cytosol Plasma membrane Cytoskeleton Lysosome Endosome Peroxisome ER Golgi apparatus Nucleus Mitochondrion Manual annotation Automatic computational assertionSubcellular location
Tissue Specificity:

Widely expressed. Not expressed in liver and lung.

Subunit Structure:

Heterodimer of an alpha and a beta subunit. The beta subunit determines specificity for ATP (By similarity). Interacts with ALAS2.

Family&Domains:

Belongs to the succinate/malate CoA ligase beta subunit family. ATP-specific subunit beta subfamily.
